Isaac Johnson's birth & death dates are from the Memorial Record of Alabama interview with his son, James Johnson.

Isaac obtained a marriage license on 13 Jan 1837 in Jones County, GA, and he and Martha Kelly were married there on 2 Feb 1837 by H. Flowers, J. P.

They are found on the 1840 census in Crawford Co., GA. [However, listed in the Jones District, Warren Co., GA, there are two men named Isaac Johnson on the 1840 census--one with the same age column 20-29 checked for Isaac & spouse and 1 male & 1 female under 5 (pg 165), the other Isaac is listed as age 30-39, with more children (pg 169). Descendants should be aware that some family trees may be confused because of these census records.]

Our Isaac Johnson and his wife Martha had been married about 3 years, depending on when this 1840 census was actually enumerated. Their household is shown in Crawford Co, GA with 1 male under 5, 1 male 20-29 [Isaac], 1 female under 5, and 1 female 20-29 [Martha].

Isaac Johnson and family are on the 1850 Census in Crawford County, GA - which shows Isaac as age 43, born NC and his wife Martha as age 34, born in GA. There are 8 children listed with them.

On 1 Sept 1860, Isaac purchased 40.02 acres of land in Pike County, approximately 6 miles southeast of the hill that the Josie community occupies, and it lies just north of the intersection of present day Pike County Roads 69 and 34. They are on the 1866 AL State Census, Pike County.

Isaac and Martha divorced in Pike County, AL prior to the 1870 census. [Note: If anyone has the official date or other information, please contact me.] There are associated records on file in the Pike County Courthouse. Isaac apparently initially kept the older children who were still at home, and Martha initially kept the youngest.

Isaac Johnson is on the 1870 Pike County Census enumerated 27 June 1870, household 103, age 63, with his daughters Mary age 21 and Julia age 16. There is a Martha J. Kelley enumerated in household 104, same property, age 27 born GA with a son Jasper age 9 born AL, who might be his niece by marriage and her son, but that is unproven.

Also on the 1870 Pike County Census, enumerated 30 June 1870, Martha Johnson, age 51, is in household 293, living with son William Johnson, age 30 as head of household, and Martha, age 21. Son James Johnson is living next door, head of household 294, with his brother Robert, age 14.

There are a number of Johnson graves in Cotton Cemetery per my family's oral history. Many do not have tombstones, having originally had wooden markers that have since disappeared.

Isaac Johnson is buried near the road that goes in front of Cotton Cemetery, at the feet of his daughter, Elizabeth Johnson Hughes, but he does not have a tombstone. My Grandmother identified his burial location (and that of other kin in Cotton Cemetery) when she took me there when I was 12 years old. She wanted to ensure that these unmarked burial locations were passed on to future generations.
