Louisa Ann Johnson was the daughter of Isaac Johnson and his wife Martha Kelly, who brought their family to Pike County apparently in the 1850s.

Louisa married William W. Hurst in Pike County, AL on 26 Nov 1855. They settled on a farm near their parents and had four children: Nancy Jane b. 22 Oct 1858, Elizabeth Louisa "Lou" b. ca 1859, William W. J. Hurst b. 13 May 1862, and a baby, Mary Estille Hurst. [NOTE: If anyone has more information on the baby or others, please contact me.]

However, her husband William W. Hurst answered the call and enlisted in the "Perote Guards" when the war began, and became a Pvt. in Co. D 1st Ala Infantry Regiment CSA. He and Hezekiah Hurst were both injured in battle at Island 10 and at Port Hudson, where Hezekiah died. William was taken by ship to the Confederate Hospital in the Grand Hotel at Point Clear, AL on Mobile Bay after Port Hudson fell 9 July 1863. He died there, leaving Louisa a widow with a farm and four small children under age 5. Fortunately both his and her kin lived nearby and helped her with the farm.

After the war ended, Berry H. King came back from the war and hired on to help her on the farm. Family oral history says he had known her husband during the war, and came to tell her about him. They married on 15 Jan 1867 in Pike County. Her Hurst grandchildren said she and Berry got along really well and both had a great sense of humor.

The 1910 Census for Pike County, AL lists them as married 43 years, and says that Louisa had borne 9 children with 7 living (at the time this census was taken, 22 April 1910).
