Mrs. James had been a resident of Knoxville since August of 2009. She lived in the Shannondale Retirement Community.
Mrs. James was born and raised in Glen Ridge, NJ, the daughter of Spencer Cone Hamilton, Jr., and the former Ethel Hapeman Sadler. She graduated from Glen Ridge (NJ) High School in 1938, at age 16 as the school’s valedictorian, and graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Wellesley College in 1942. Mrs. James married Arthur H. James, then a lieutenant in the United States Army Air Corps, in April 1942. For most of the next 31 years, Mrs. James served as an “Air Force Wife” – a title that she accepted as a badge of honor. They moved frequently as the Air Force required, including service in Great Britain in the 1950s, which allowed them to attend the parade accompanying the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. At every location she was active in local or on-base volunteer activities, including service as a Red Cross “Gray Lady” and as president or some other responsible position with the Officer’s Wives Clubs at her husband’s various postings. Her husband retired from the Air Force as a Colonel in 1972 and they lived in Colorado Springs, Colorado. She volunteered with numerous local charities in Colorado Springs, especially the League of Women Voters where she was a member for more than 35 years. In the late 1970s she was president of the League’s local chapter, and was often a spokesperson for the chapter on local television.
Arthur and Ann James raised three sons, the oldest of whom was Arthur H. James, Jr., a former long-time Knoxville resident who died in 2015. After his death, Art’s widow, Linda L. James, served as Mrs. James caregiver, although until the week before her death she was in excellent health. She is survived by two married sons, Douglas S. (and Patricia) James, of Thornton, Colorado, and Bruce H. (and Nancy), James of Silver Spring, Maryland. She is survived, also, by four grandchildren: Aaron James (and Jane Dirkin), of Knoxville; Evan (and Dr. Teri-Lee) James; of Fargo, North Dakota; Elizabeth Anne James of Durham, North Carolina; and Rachelli (and Craig) Simon, of Silver Spring, Maryland. Last summer, Mrs. James celebrated her 95th birthday with her beloved six great granddaughters, Wren, Andie, Bayla, Zahava, Naomi, and Ellie. She was preceded in death by her partner, Dr. Ernest L. Ohle, Ph.d., in 2009.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to Wellesley College, Office of Development Services, 106 Central Ave., Wellesley, MA 02481.
