Born October 24, 1825 in Washington County, Indiana (probably in Salem), Rebecca Jane Burris had a short but eventful life. At age 15 on 9 February 1841 in Salem, IN, she married (with her father's consent, since she was under the legal age) Andrew W. Barnett (1819-1987). It was a civil marriage, solemnized by George Denny, Justice of the Peace. It was not, however, a "shotgun" wedding; the couple's first child, Franklin (1842-1920), was born in November of the following year; he married Mary Elizabeth (Mollie or Lizzie) Peden in 1866. Rebecca and Andrew Barnett had four more children: Mary Elizabeth Barnett Jordan (1844-1881), Elizabeth A. Barnett Anderson Daniels (called Eliza) (1846-1915), Nancy S. Barnett Jackson (1848-1884), and Caroline Barnett (b. 1852).

In 1860, the family lived in Salem, Washington, Indiana: Andrew and Rebecca with children Frank (age 20), Elizabeth (18), Eliza (14), Nancy (11), and Caroline (8). Andrew Barnett served in the Civil War, enlisting as a Private in Co. B of the Indian Infantry (he had been born in Indiana) on 18 August 1862. He received a disability discharge from Company B, 16th Infantry Regiment Indiana on 7 Oct 1863 and may also have served in the 10th Infantry Regiment of the Company. In 1870, Rebecca lived in Olathe with her husband, her daughter Eliza Anderson, and her one-year old granddaughter Zella Anderson.

Andrew Barnett died in 1877; in 1880, Rebecca was living with her divorced daughter Eliza Anderson and Eliza's daughter Zella Anderson (age 11) in Olathe, KS. Eliza, working as a seamstress, is head of household. That year, Eliza married again, to Richard L. Daniels.

Rebecca died 7 March 1884 in Olathe and was buried on March 10 in the Olathe Memorial Cemetery Olathe KS; Section 19, Row 04, Blk 56.
