Born October 5, 1819 in Washington County, Indiana (probably in Salem), Andrew W. Barnett married Rebecca Jane Burris (1825-1884) on 9 February 1841 in Salem, IN. The bride was 15, under the legal age, and was married with her father's consent. It was a civil marriage, solemnized by George Denny, Justice of the Peace. It was not, however, a "shotgun" wedding; the couple's first child, Franklin (1842-1920), was born in November of the following year; he married Mary Elizabeth (Mollie or Lizzie) Peden in 1866. Rebecca and Andrew Barnett had four more children: Mary Elizabeth Barnett Jordan (1844-1881), Elizabeth A. Barnett Anderson Daniels (called Eliza) (1846-1915), Nancy S. Barnet (b. abt. 1848), and Caroline Barnett (b. 1852).

In 1860, the family lived in Salem, Washington, Indiana: Andrew and Rebecca with children Frank (age 20), Elizabeth (18), Eliza (14), Nancy (11), and Caroline (8). Andrew Barnett served in the Civil War, enlisting as a Private in Co. B of the Indian Infantry (he had been born in Indiana) on 18 August 1862. He received a disability discharge from Company B, 16th Infantry Regiment Indiana on 7 Oct 1863 and may also have served in the 10th Infantry Regiment of the Company. On Feb. (Sept.?) 7, 1868, Andrew filed for an invalid's pension. In 1870, the couple lived in Olathe with their her daughter Eliza Anderson and her one-year old granddaughter Zella Anderson. Andrew died in 1877; on March 11, 1878, his widow filed for a pension due for his military service. E. G. Bridges supplied the military headstone for Andrew and a contract to provide it was dated Nov. 29, 1879.
