Gerrit L. Scholten
Gerrit L. Scholten passed away suddenly on Monday morning while working with the De Vries Transfer Company in Orange City.
He was born on a farm 1½ miles northeast of Alton on August 25, 1899, and married Clara Van Zandbergen on Jan. 22, 1925.
He was an Alton resident all of his life except from 1928 when the family moved to Grand Rapids, Mich., returning to their hometown in 1930, where he farmed until 1934, For the next ten years, he was with the De Vries Freight and Transfer Co. and from 1945 to 1966, was custodian in the Floyd Valley Public School System. He retired in 1966 but was always busy helping his families, his many friends and acting as caretaker of the County Park, North Alton.
Sister Leona, unmarried, passed away a number of years ago.
