Mr. Elroy Scholten, age 80, of Alton, passed away Friday, October 9 at the Oak Park Care Center in Sheldon.

THe memorial service was held on Saturday, October 10, 1998, at 2:00 p.m. at the Alton Reformed Church in Alton. The Rev. Roger Voskuil officiated. Interment was prior to the service at the Nassau Township Cemetery, near Alton. The Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City was in charge of arrangements.

Elroy Harold was born October 16, 1917, in rural Alton, the son of Henry and Anna Marie (Ketel) Scholten. He was raised at Alton. As a young adult, he was employed by the Farmer's Elevator in Alton and De Vries Transfer in Orange City. He also served in the United States Armed Forces during World War II.

On March 12, 1948, he married Beverly Jean Edwards in Chicago, Illinois. They made their home in Alton. Elroy then served in the military again during the Korean Conflict, after which he was employed by the Iowa Department of Transportation for 31 years. He retired in 1982.

In October of 1994, he became a resident of the Oak Park Care Center.

He was a member of the Alton Reformed Church and Floyd Post 200 of the American Legion in Alton. He enjoyed woodworking and gardening.

Survivors include his wife; two sons and their wives, Bill and Beverly Scholten of Hospers; and Harold and Doris Scholten of Sheldon; a granddaughter, Julie Scholten;-a sister Anna Marie Berkenpas of Hartley; two sisters-in-law, Esther Scholten of Artesia, California; and Clara Scholten of Sioux Center; and a brother-in-law, Roy Rens of Orange City.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Gerrit and Lawrence Scholten; and five sisters, Julia Aberson, Maryls Rens, Leona Scholten, a toddler, and an infant.

Memorials are being directed to Alzheimers causes.
