Robert “Bob” Mai, 92, of Remsen, Iowa, died Wednesday, June 14, 2017, at Happy Siesta Health Care Center in Remsen.

A funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 19, 2017, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Remsen, with Rev. William McCarthy officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Remsen. Visitation with family present will be 4-7 p.m. Sunday. There will be a rosary at 5:00 p.m. by the Knights of Columbus and a vigil prayer service at 7:00 p.m. at Fisch Funeral Home & Monument in Remsen.

Services have been entrusted to the Fisch Funeral Home & Monument of Remsen.

Robert was born June 24, 1924, to John and Theresa (Rodesch) Mai in Remsen. Robert was educated at St. Mary's Catholic School in Remsen. He loved to play baseball and was a lefty fastball pitcher and told stories of various games he played over the years.

Robert met his future wife, Mary Cronin, at a dance at the Avalon Ballroom in Remsen. They married on June 19, 1946, at Holy Name Catholic Church in Marcus. They lived and farmed north of Remsen from 1948 to 1980, then moved into Remsen. He continued to farm near Struble, Iowa, and worked part-time at the Farmer's Elevator in Remsen for several years.

Bob was very active. He enjoyed bowling, fishing, golfing, playing cards and pool, storytelling, and giving $2 bills and quarters to the grandchildren.

Bob was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Federated Order of Eagles, and the Sportsman's Club.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife of nearly 71 years, Mary; children, James (Donna) Mai, LeMars, IA; daughter-in-law, Kathy Mai, Aberdeen, SD; Carol (Robert) Hardy, Harrisburg, SD; Paul (Patricia) Mai, Alton, IA; John (Sherrie) Mai, LeMars; Mary (Monte) Konopasek, Remsen; and Judy (Randy) Aldrich, Sioux Falls, SD; 21 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild; sister, Marlene (Arens) Wilmes, Mankato, MN; sisters-in-law, Paula Cronin, Marcus, IA; Norma Cronin, Holstein, IA; and Joan Cronin, Marcus; and many nieces and nephews.

Those waiting in heaven are his parents; son, Thomas (Tom); stepfather, Charles Arens; sisters, Adeline (Leo) Beckmann, Lorraine (Eddie) Herrig, and Orline (Roland) Porter; and brother, Marvin (Rose Mary) Mai.
