Ernest Rueben Nissila, age 77, of Menahga formerly of Gilbert, passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2006, at the Green Pine Acres Nursing Home in Menahga.

Ernie was born on Nov. l6, 1928, near Menahga to William and Edla (Salo) Nissila. He attended country school in the Shell River area until moving his family to the Cedar Valley area near Floodwood where he continued his education. Following the death of his mother, while he was just a boy, he went to live with his older sister, Sally and her husband, Kasper Jurva. He grew into manhood working on their dairy farm near Nimrod, Minn. Ernie proudly served his country in the United States Army as a member of the 514th Transport Truck Company in Korea during the Korean War.

Following his honorable discharge in July of 1953, he returned to the Nimrod area where he turned the heads of the pretty gals with his new big fancy cars. He started working in the iron ore mines of Northeastern Minnesota in 1954. On Sept. 27, 1958, Ernie was united in marriage in Hubbard, Minn. to one of the three pretty Immonen girls from the Huntersville, Minn. area, Elsie Irene. This union was blessed with two children: Lila and Gordy. The young couple made their home in Minneapolis for a time where Ernie was employed with the Minneapolis Electric Steel Casting Company for four years. In 1967, Ernie returned to the Iron Range with his family where he worked for the Erie Mining Company as a filter operator in a career that spanned over 25 years until his retirement in 1993. They then retired to Menahga where they have made their home right up to the present time.

Ernie loved the out of doors; especially when he could be out hunting the wily whitetail deer or fishing. He took special pride in caring for his home and yard. Each spring he enjoyed laying out his garden rows for Elsie to plant. He was a lifetime member of the Guy L. McDermit VFW Post 6206 in Menahga. He enjoyed participating in a pool league and playing competitive horseshoes. Above all, Ernie devoted his life to his wife, his children and his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, whom he loved with all his heart.
Ernest was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters, Gertrude, Lila, Allie and Sally and two brothers, Reino and Clarence.
