Melvin D. Westermeyer, 89 of Keokuk, IA died Tuesday, November 28, 2017 at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington, IA.
He was born July 19, 1928 in Argyle, IA the son of Louis and Cleste Derr Westermeyer. On March 5, 1949 he was united in marriage to Lila Paige Barker in Donnellson, IA. She preceded him in death on July 6, 2015.
He graduated from Argyle High School in Argyle, IA with the Class of 1946.
Melvin had been employed by Hubinger/Heinz Company for thirty-two years, until he retired at age sixty-two. He also tended his farm for many years.
Melvin was a member of St. Paul United Christian Church in Keokuk and was also a member of the Grain Millers Union.
Melvin enjoyed watching sports on television. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan. Melvin liked reading books, especially westerns. He raised Quarter Horses, Appaloosas and Thoroughbreds. His favorite horse was Franks Tank. Most of all, Melvin loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is survived by one son, Kirk Douglas Westermeyer (Kathy Scott) of Keokuk, one daughter, Kathy Ann Hagmeier (Ron) of Montrose, IA, two grandsons, Stacy Lynn Hagmeier and Colt Sterling Hagmeier both of Montrose, IA, two step-grandsons, Clint Hagmeier (Carrie) of Ft. Madison, IA and Matt Hagmeier (Kim) of Montrose, six great-grandchildren, Dylan Hagmeier, Lila Ann Hagmeier both of Montrose, IA, Jill Hagmeier of Keokuk, Jesse Hagmeier of Ft. Madison, IA, Zachary Hagmeier of Pontoosuc, IL and Karly Harvey of Montrose, IA, extended family, the Affruni, Hurst, Westermeyer, Fickle, Klein and Bradley families.
He was also preceded in death by brothers and sisters, Audrey, Florabelle, Lola, George, Eldon, Gilbert, Norman and Calvin.
A Celebration of Life will be held from 2-5 p.m., Friday, December 8, 2017, at the Keokuk Yacht Club, 2029 River Road in Keokuk. Burial will be held at a later date.
