He was born July 13, 1931 in Cass County, the son of Ralph and Amanda Ring Launer. He married Shirley Parker on September 8, 1953 in Ft. Bliss, TX and she survives.
He is also survived by two daughters, Marcia Stratton (husband, David) of Springfield and Jeannine “Jeannie” Cox (husband, Michael) of Virginia; four grandchildren, Ryan Stratton and Erin Moe (husband, Andrew), all of Springfield, and Andrew “Drew” Cox (special friend, Brooke Jones) of Virginia and Tyler Cox (wife, Tiffany) of Higbee, MO; three great grandchildren; three sisters, Norma Sweatman of Virginia, Jane Webster of Springfield, and Joann Anderson of Virginia; and several nieces and nephews.
A 1949 graduate of Virginia High School, Ernest served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict from 1953-1955. He was a life-long grain and livestock farmer in Cass County.
Ernest was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Bluff Springs, formerly serving on the church council. He was a former chairman of the Cass County Board of Supervisors, former treasurer of the Cass County Genealogical and Historical Society, former board member and secretary of the Cass-Morgan Farm Bureau, and former board member of the Cass County Extension Service.
He was formerly active in the Virginia Jaycees, Cass-Schuyler Habitat for Humanity, Beardstown Elks Lodge, and enjoyed broadcasting as a ham radio operator under the call sign, WA9UQC. For over 25 years, Ernest and his wife enjoyed wintering in Naples, FL.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 am, Wednesday, March 21, 2018, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Bluff Springs with burial at Walnut Ridge Cemetery in Virginia.
