1788 Sullivan County, TN.: Said to have married Rachel Russell
1793: Joseph Birdwell, land record 27 July 1793 Hawkins Co, N.C. [Nov. 1786: Hawkins County, N.C. was created out of Sullivan Co., N.C./TN.; in 1790, Hawkins Co. was ceded to the Southwest Territory (aka Territory South of the Ohio River); and in 1796 became Tennessee .

Family trees say he moved further southwest down the Tennessee river to Knox County, Tennessee, 1797-1801. Knox County was formed from parts of Greene County and Hawkins County. Sullivan County adjoins Hawkins County's western border.

Interment unconfirmed.
Most likely buried in a lost family cemetery on their farm, although possibly buried in the first Presbyterian Cemetery, earliest cemetery in Knoxville in the 1790s.
The Presbyterian church was the strongest, biggest and earliest congregation in Knoxville, although the Birdwell family was Baptist and Methodist previously, and originally Anglican or Episcopalian.

Joseph and Rachel Russell Birdwell were the ancestors of Russell J. Birdwell Jr. of Hollywood.
