On Dec. 3, 1949, he married Ruthene Hinton in Hutchinson, KS.
He enlisted into the United States Army on January 10, 1952 in Camp Carson, CO and was discharged on December 9, 1953.
James was a member of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church of Hutchinson, the American Legion, Plumber’s Union and The Moose.
He was employed with Stevens plumbing for many years before starting his own business, Barnes Plumbing. After many years of service to the community, he passed on the business to his son.
James was also an instructor at Hutchinson Community College and Purdue University, teaching the certification and licensing programs, apprentice journeymen training.
Preceding him in death are his parents, his spouse, Ruthene, 11 siblings, Helen Mae, Pauline, Phillip, Charles, Robert, Thelma, Lajuanta, Paul, Vernon, Dorothy and Delores.
Survivors include two children, son, Gary and wife Tina, California and Sherry Barnes-Barnett and husband Howard, New Mexico; five grandchildren, Gavin Barnes, Kyle Barnes, Kendra Hughes, Jayme Schmidt and Tylor Schmidt; and many great grandchildren.
Visitation will be held on Friday, December 1, 2017 from 5:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m. at Hutchinson Funeral Chapel, with the family greeting from 6:00-8:00 p.m.
Funeral Services will be held, Saturday, December 2, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral chapel. Burial will follow at Fairlawn Cemetery.
