José Bernardino de Siena Guirado y Urquídez was born at Los Angeles, Alta California, México, where he was baptized at the Plaza Church on May 21, 1845 (LA Baptism 01476). He became a U.S. citizen with the transfer of California's sovereignty in 1848. Bernardino was educated at Santa Ynez College, Santa Barbara, and settled in Los Nietos in 1864, where he operated the Pioneer Store. He married (1) Eduarda Poyorena y Sánchez on January 20, 1870. Eduarda died during childbirth. Bernardino then married (2) María de la Luz Epifanio Sánchez y Archuleta about 1882. He had oil interests in Santa Fe Springs and Rancho La Brea that sustained his family following his death.
