Civil War: Company D, 1st Battalion, Native California Cavalry

José María Leandro Guirado y Urquídez was born at Los Ángeles, Alta California, México, and was baptized at the Los Ángeles Plaza Church March 12, 1843 (LA Baptisms 01190). He was the son of José Rafael Victor Guirado y Botello and María Victoria Vicenta Urquídez y Lisalde. He became a U.S. citizen with the transfer of California's sovereignty in 1848. During the Civil War Leandro enlisted as a private for 3 years at Los Ángeles January 14, 1864, and was mustered into Company D, 1st Battalion, Native California Cavalry, at Drum Barracks March 3. He was promoted to corporal at Drum Barracks July 14, 1865. Corporal Guirado was posted to Fort Mason, Arizona Territory, from September 1865 until January 1866. While at Fort Mason he contracted a hernia. He returned to California with his company and was mustered out at Drum Barracks March 20, 1866. Two of his brothers were also Union veterans: Juan Francisco Guirado, 1st Lieutenant, Company B, 1st California Cavalry; and Francisco Guirado, 1st Sergeant, Company D, 1st Battalion, Native California Cavalry. Leandro married the widow Petra Peraza y Salas de Vesigas in 1886 and acquired to step-sons: George Vesigas y Peraza (born 1878?) and Pablo Vesigas y Peraza (born October 1880). Leandro and Petra later had a son of their own, Leandro "Andrew," born in September 1895. He filed for a Civil War veteran's pension January 24, 1891, and received application No. 984,450 and certificate No. 704,021. He was admitted to the Pacific Branch, National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers, at Sawtelle on April 7, 1900. The name and address of his nearest relative was Petra, his wife, at 711 Commerce Street, Los Ángeles. He was discharged from the Sawtelle soldiers' home at his own request February 27, 1903, but was readmitted July 26, 1904. Leandro again left the Sawtelle soldiers' home October 13, 1913, and remained with his family until being readmitted January 9, 1923. He stayed at the home most of that year, leaving at his own request December 19, 1923. He remained at home with his family until his death. José María Leandro Guirado y Urquides was buried at Calvary Cemetery April 5, 1926. He was survived by his wife, Petra, one step son, and his son, Leandro Guirado. Petra filed for a widow's pension May 6, 1931, and received application No. 1,693,478, but died before a certificate number was issued.
