PIONEER MEETS SUDDEN DEATH

Native Son and First in Drug Business

Guirado Takes a Keen Interest in the City's Affairs to the Last Day of His Life – Born in Los Angeles Seventy-one Years Ago and Was Educated in San Francisco

The dean of Los Angeles druggists, Ralph C. Guirado, will be buried Saturday morning, having died suddenly Tuesday afternoon of heart failure at his home, No. 535 Towne avenue, where he has lived for many years. He was one of the pioneers in the Chamber of Commerce, and on the day previous to his demise visited there, and was also present at the meeting of the City Council at which the plans for the new Southern Pacific depot were discussed, he having been vitally interested in the project by reason of considerable property holdings in that section of the city.

He spoke to his wife about not feeling well on his return, but the sickness did not appear serious. Tuesday noon he had a severe headache and shortly after 2 o'clock expired suddenly and unexpectedly. He was 71 years of age and was born in Los Angeles, his father having been Raphael Guirado, who came to California from Mexico with the Spanish pioneers. At the time of the Mexican War, the older Guirado was captured by the American troops and was held a prisoner until the conclusion of the trouble.

The Guirado homestead in those days was the present site of the old Belasco Theater, and the deceased when a boy was sent to San Francisco to school. He remained there until well along in man's estate and then came here and opened one of the first exclusive retail drug stores in the city. Shortly afterwards he opened the original wholesale drug store and continued in this business until about ten years ago, when he retired from all active business, having acquired a fortune in this and real estate investments.

He was married a second time about seven years ago, to Miss Edith Chidester, who survives him. His daughter by his first wife, Mrs. Nita Vail, resides in Pasadena. His sister was the wife of Gov. Downey, but long since passed away. The funeral services will be held in the chapel of the Booth & Boylson Company at 10 o'clock Saturday morning, and interment will be in Rosedale Cemetery.

From Find A Grave member Christine Petrie:

Ralph married Miss Edith Chidester in 1907. Edith was born Sarah Edith Chidester in Odessa, Nebraska on April 4th, 1877. She was the second daughter to Betsy Ann Ransom and John E. Chidester. Her oldest sister Gladys Deliliah Chidester married Clarence Geer and lived in Glendale, California. She probably came to California to see her sister Edith. Edith's mother, Betsy was the the older sister to my grandfather's mother Mary Ransom. He left me many pictures of her family and a picture of Edith as a child. Edith remarried John T. Powell and is buried at Mountain View Cemetery in Altadena, California.
