A native of Carrollton VA he was the son of the late Reeves and Ocie Hendricks Murphy and was retired from the United States Army.
He is survived by Phyllis Butler Murphy; his children Vickie Lee Murphy of Suffolk; Vernon Sydney Murphy of Tyner NC; Dr. Michael David Murphy of Winchester VA; six grandchildren and four great grandchildren; two sisters Sarah Danaceau of Newport News VA and Sadie Boyette of IN; one brother Melvin Murphy of Carrollton VA; several nieces and nephews.
A funeral will be conducted Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. in the Baker-Foster Funeral Home Bennett's Creek Chapel 5685 Lee Farm Lane by Father Piotr Bialkowski. The family will receive friends at the home following the service. Condolences may be registered at www.rwbakerfh.com.
