Prussian Royalty. He was the last ruling Grand Duke of Oldenburg, serving from June 13, 1900, upon the death of his father, Peter II, until November 11, 1918, shortly before the German monarchy was abolished. His mother was Princess Elisabeth of Saxe-Altenburg. On February 18, 1878, he married Princess Elisabeth Anna of Prussia, daughter of Princess Maria Anna of Anhalt-Dessau and Prince Frederick Charles of Prussia. After her death in 1895, he married Elisabeth Alexandrine of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. During his reign, he received numerous honors and awards, including the Grand Cross of the Order of Duke Peter Friedrich Ludwig, the Grand Cross of Henry the Lion, the Grand Cross of the Württemberg Crown, the Grand Cross of the Saxe-Ernestine House Order, and the Knight of the Black Eagle. After abdicating his throne, he and his family took up residence at Rastede Castle, where he pursued farming and local industrial interests. He died at the age of 78.
