"Louis G. Scramlin, 78, of Cherry Valley, died Tuesday, Oct. 25, in Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown. He was born March 24, 1910, in the town of Cherry Valley, a son of Linwood and Jessise Wilson Scramlin. On Nov. 9, 1934, he married Nellie Wright in Afton. She died in March 1974. A lifelong area resident, he was a daiyr farmer. He and his sister were born on the Willson homestead in Cherry Valley. The house in which they were born was one of the oldest in Cherry Valley, having been built in 1789. The farm was started in 1783 by Mr. Scramlin's great-great-great-grandfather, James Willson, who came to this country from Ireland. (Mr. Willson was the first surveyor of the Lindsay Patent in what is now the town of Cherry Valley and was captain of the fort at the time of the Cherry Valley Massacre.) Mr. Scramlin was a 60-year member of the Cherry Valley United Methodist Church, a 59-year member of Cherry Valley IOOF Lodge 102, of which he was a Past Noble Grand and Past District Grand Master, and a 46-year member of Cherry Valley Rebekah Chapter 545. He also was a member of the Holstein Association. Survivors include a son, Robert Scralin, Cherry Valley; two grandchildren; a sister, Florence W. Sinclair, Cherry Valley; and several cousins. Funeral service was 2 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 29, in the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley, with the, Rev. Paul Freeman, pastor of the Cherry Valley United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial was in Cherry Valley Cemetery. Calling hours were at the funeral home Friday and an Odd Fellows service was also conducted in the evening.
