Obituary of Simon Nolte - Died 12May1908

"SIMON NOLTE DIES; CAME HERE IN 1854

One of Best Known of Milwaukee's Pioneers

Passes Away After Short Illness

WAS MERCHANT AND MILLER

First Began Business at Reed Street

Site of Milwaukee Road's Old Station

Simon Nolte, age 77 years, one of the pioneer residents of the south side, and father of Drs. Lewis G. and Robert F. Nolte of this city died yesterday at his home, 1506 Humbolt avenue, from a complication of diseases with which he has been troubled for some time. The aged man was not seriously ill, however, until about a week ago.

Mr. Nolte was born in Duderstadt, Hanover, Germany, May 10, 1831, and was educated in the gymnasium in that place, later attending other schools in Duderstadt, where he learned the trade of an art potter. He came to this country in 1852 and was one of the first settlers of Allentown, Penn., where he lived for two years.

In 1854, Mr. Nolte moved to Milwaukee and opened a general store on the site of the old Reed street Union depot, but was forced to sell his property in a short time to the Milwaukee road. After his marriage in 1856 to Miss Paulina Esche, he engaged in the wholesale liquor and rectifying business on the north side of the old Menomonee bridge and soon this second location was also sold to the railroad.

From this time until 1877, Mr. Nolte was engaged in the hotel and restaurant business on the south side, and then he started upper mills on the old canal, which is now Commerce street. He retired from active business some years later.

He is survived by his wife, and seven children, among whom are Mrs. George Theuring, wife of the former county treasurer, Dr. Lewis G. Nolte, Mrs. Ida de Claude of New York, Dr. Robert F. Nolte, Mrs. C.D. Mettheisen, Dr. Henry Nolte and Simon Nolte Jr., who is connected with the engineering department of the Wisconsin Telephone company.

This afternoon the body will be incinerated at Forest Home Cemetery, following a private funeral at the residence."
