John Elbert Adams was the son of James Thomas Adams and Martha Eldorada Butler.

John married Rosa Lee Winkles, daughter of James & Ann Brumbalow Winkles, on February 10, 1910, in Madison County, Alabama.

To this union was born thirteen children - four of whom died at birth or early on (buried at Moon). The surviving children were Rachel (Treece), Albert Lonzo "Buddy", Bertie Lorene (Bird), Ruby Nancy (Boyd), James Walter Adams, John Junior Adams, Samuel Ligie "Sammie", Rosie Virginia (Jones), and William Jasper "Billy".

John, who had spent the majority of his life as a farmer, died December 17, 1935, from "sarcoma of left kidney". He had apparently been ailing for some time as his death certificate also indicates that he had undergone a nephrectomy (surgical removal of the kidney), in July of that same year.
