He married Nellie Bly Powell with whom he had several daughters:
Abia Ellen (1876-1886)
Blanche Nellie (1878-1942 ) m John Ira Miller
Edith (1881-1917) m Malcolm O Bland
Also possibly
Helen (1894-1957) m Jeremiah Zeigler aka Jerry Ziegler although Helen may be the daughter of her mother's second husband, Albert Barker.
Joel Cyrus Ranney was listed as "divorced" in the 1900, 1910 and 1920 US Census for Kansas. When exactly he was divorced is unclear, but his wife was living with a new husband, Albert Barker by the time the 1895 Kansas State Census was taken. Joel apparently did not remarry; he lived with his widowed sister Emily Clark in 1900 and 1910, and with the household of his oldest surviving daughter Blanche Miller, in 1920 (his name has been wrongly transcribed for the 1920 US Census as "Jonas S" rather than Joel C.)
"Joel C. Ranney was born Feb 8 1848 near Columbus OH and died on Feb 12 1922 at his home in Ames KS age 74 years 4 days....he came to KS in the early 1870s and settled on a homestead near Agenda KS. He was united in marriage to Miss Nellie B. Powell at Wayne Republic County KS June 20 1872. To this union were born 3 daughters, 2 preceding him to a better world. Those of the immediate family left to mourn him are the daughter Mrs. J. I. Miller and his grandchildren...The funeral was held...at the Ames church....The Masonic lodge held their services both at the church and at the grave which was Pleasant View Cemetery south of Ames....
