After the war, John moved to the Great Plains along with 3 of his siblings, Emily Clark, Harriet Headley and Joel Cyrus Ranney. In 1870 he married New York state native Mary Josephine Manning, whose parents had also moved to Kansas, and they had the following children together:

Towards the end of his life John was institutionalized in a Kansas State hospital in Parsons. The cemetery said that the owner of the plot where he and his wife were buried was bought by Elliott Ranney, their youngest child.
