HAROLD ULVEN FAMILY

Harold Ulven, son of Ole A. Ulven and Karen Evenson, was born in 1900 on a farm east of Soldier. HIs farming career started and ended on the Ulven farm in Section 1 of Jordan Township near Soldier.
Harold was a forerunner in the field of conservation and served as a commissioner of the Monona Soil Conservation District for a number of years. In the early 1940's, the hills on his farm displayed some of the first terraces and contour plowing found in Monona County.
Harold was an interested community worker, serving on boards of the Co-op, Farm Bureau and the local telephone company. He also served his Lutheran Church at Soldier in every capacity.
After retirement from the farm, he engaged in carpentry work around the Soldier area.
At the age of twenty-five he married Mary Hanson, daughter of Ole T. Hanson and Mattie Field. She was the teacher of Jordan No. 1 which was also known as the Ulven school. They started their married live on the family farm and four children were born there.
Marvin, born August 24, 1926, married Bonnie Stark of Paullina and farms near Paullina. They have 3 children, Mark, Matthew, and Sara.
Shirley, born November 12, 1928 married Robert Aronson of Charter Oak, Iowa. They moved to Ft. Collins, Colorado where Shirley teaches school. They have 2 daughters, Trudy and Cynthia. Robert died in September of 1981.
Lois, born December 24, 1930, married Frank Whitney of Sloan and moved to California. She was killed in an accident there in 1978. They have 2 daughters Kay and Joni and granddaughters Athena and Haley.
Orvan, born September 19, 1935, now owns and farms the family farm. He married Barbara Albertsen of Battle Creek, Iowa. They have 2 sons, Brian and Brent, 2 daughters Cari and Kelli and granddaughter, Rene.
Harold died in April of 1978. Mary still resides in Soldier.
