The Bartholomews.

The Bartholomew family is certainly the largest, and probably the oldest, family now living in Whitehall. The founder, Lemuel came from Litchfield, Conn., and was born in 1726. He married Mary Squire in 1748, and they settled in Skenesborough twenty years later. He died in 1801, and his wife lived two or three years longer. They had a large family, eight boys and four girls. The first six children were born in Litchfield.
1. Joseph was the eldest, and was born about 1750. When he was seventeen he left home to go and look up new lands for the family. He made ___________________ arrangements with Skene for a lot, and then started home, but at Rutland he was taken down with the small pox and died.
2. Jesse was the second child. He early removed to Chautauga county, where he died in 1836. None of his descendants live in this section.
3. Jeptha was a soldier in the Revolution, and was at the battle of Trenton. He had ten children, and is the ancestor of most of the Dresden Bartholomews; also of William T. of Whitehall. He died in 1813.
4. Lemme (sic. Lemma) was the fourth son, and of him we will write elsewhere. He married Ann Wilson, and was accidentally killed in 1790. Amaryllis, daughter of his son John, was the mother of the Terry family. He is the ancestor of A. D. Bartholomew of this village.
5. Asenath was the eldest daughter. She married William Hurlburt, and her descendants still reside in Fair Haven and Dresden.
6. Squire was a baby when the family came to their new home. He grew up on the old place and married Abigail, daughter of the Rev. Cornelius Jones, their nearest neighbor. He was prominent in political and military affairs and died in 1846.
7. Justus, born June 20, 1771, was the first Bartholomew native of Whitehall. He was a Methodist preacher and moved from town about 1805. He lived at various places in Western New York and Pennsylvania, and died in Hornellsville. He had sixteen children, but none of his decendants reside in this section.
8. Mary, the second daughter, married James Wilson of North Whitehall and raised a large family.
9. William was born in 1775 and lived on what was later known as the Peters place. His only son went in 1849 to California, where he was killed three years later.
10. Susannah married Dyer Beckwith, and became the mother of the Beckwith family.
11. Anna married Nathaniel Miller and lived and died in Toconderoga.
12. Joseph, the youngest, was a namesake of the eldest son who had died. It is said he was an exceptionally capable young man, and seems to have been the favorite of the family. He was his father's executor. After the death of his parents he settled up his affairs in the old home and removed to the far west. He has descendants living in California.
