It is known that he died in 1887 because he is listed in the Baltimore death certificate index. However, his actual death certificate is missing.

He was placed here because it was assumed that his wife was buried with him at Holy Cross Cemetery. Bodies from Holy Cross were later moved to Woodlawn, and it is assumed that both were moved. His brother Albert Hoyt was also buried here.

He was a Civil War veteran. He enlisted in the Eleventh Infantry in 1864 and served 100 days. His wife applied for a pension based on his service in 1890.

His children were:
* James Edward 1867-1888
* Mary H. 1871-1969, seems to have married James Hoyt 1893
* Lawrence 1876-aft 1940
* Nellie Kimball 1879-1922
* Henry 1883-aft 1920
* Lillie (Helen) Stickler, then Comander/Komendal 1887-1986
