Charlotte Eileen Thurston was born March 1, 1926, in Davenport, the daughter of Adam and Pearl (Karns) Thurston. She graduated from Lowden High School in 1944. She was employed at the Rock Island Arsenal during World War II. She married Victor V. Hess on September 19, 1945, at St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Davenport. Together they farmed for nearly 50 years in Clinton County, until they retired. Victor preceded her in death on March 16, 2011. She enjoyed cooking and camping. Above all, she loved the time she spent with her family.
Surviving are four daughters, Vicki (Marty) Carrico, Deanna (David) Metzger, Debbie (Curt) Leuer and Jonelle (Andrew) Weber; two sons, Gene Hess, Richard Hess; 14 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her step-mother, Nora Thurston, her step-father, Edward Kublik, her husband, one daughter-in-law, Sally Hess, three sisters, Rosetta Burke, Lois Marolf and Leotta Pullman, five brothers, Guy, Wayne, Adam, Sandford and Donald Thurston, two half sisters, Olga Porth and Audrey Theobald, one half brother, Edgar Kublik, two nieces, Nancy Johnson and Shari Wallace and one nephew, Jerry Thurston.
