Rev. F.J. Power; Taught, Served Area Parishes
The Rev. F.J. Power, 73, died Monday in the Oakdale Nursing Home, Oakdale, after a long illness. He lived at Vianney House, 222 June St., since retiring in December 1977 as a teacher at Divine Word College in Washington, D.C.
Father Power had served at parishes in the Springfield and Worcester dioceses including Worcester, Northboro and Westboro. His first assignment after ordination to the priesthood was as a teacher at St. Charles College, Catonsville, Md.
He leaves two brothers, Paul W. Power of Deerfield Beach, Fla., and William P. Power of Worcester; six sisters, Mary E., wife of Cornelius P. Turner of Alexandria, Va., Margaret F. Power and Gertrude M., wife of William A. Dean, both of Worcester, grace L., wife of Curtis W. Novak of Framingham, Rita P., wife of George O. McCafferty of Watertown, Conn., and Elizabeth A., wife of James A. Athy of Harwich Port; and several nephews and nieces.
He was born in Worcester, son of Patrick M. and Elizabeth C (McCann) Power.
He was graduated from North High School in 1923 and summa cum laude from Holy Cross college in 1927. He studied for the priesthood at St. Mary's Seminary, Baltimore, Md., and was ordained by the Rt. Rev. Thomas M. O'Leary, D.D. bishop of Springfield, at St. Michael's Cathedral, Springfield, May 30, 1931.
A wake service will be held at 7:30 p.m. today in Immaculate Conception Church, 353 Grove St.
The Most Rev. Bernard J. Flanagan, D.D., bishop of Worcester, will be chief celebrant at a concelebrated Mass at 10 a.m. tomorrow in Immaculate Conception Church. Auxiliary Bishop Timothy J. Harrington, D.D., will assist.
The Rev. Lawrence A. Deery will deliver the homily. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery.
Athy Memorial Home, 111 Lancaster St., is directing funeral arrangements.
