Memorial services for Mel E. Adams, 80, Lawrence, will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary. A private inurnment will be held in Pioneer Cemetery on the Kansas University campus.

Mr. Adams died Saturday, March 27, 1999, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

He was born Nov. 13, 1918, near Springfield, Mo., the son of William Silas and Maggie Ann Nelson Adams. He graduated from high school in Augusta and received his bachelor's degree in journalism from KU. He received his master's degree in journalism from the University of Iowa in 1960.

He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II. He then worked four years at the Kansas City Star, and then was publisher of the Morristown (Tenn.) Sun. After he received his master's degree, he became an associate professor at the KU School of Journalism. He retired in 1989.

He married Verna Ashland on Nov. 11, 1942, in Kansas City, Mo. She survives of the home.

Other survivors include a daughter, Linda Liles, Nederland, Colo.; a son, Mark Adams, Oklahoma City; a sister, Velma Taylor, Lawrence; and a grandson.
