John was born in Bogalusa, LA on May 29, 1930 and grew up in Houston, TX. John graduated from St. Thomas High School in Houston. He then earned a Chemical Engineering degree from Rice University and an Executive MBA from Harvard. He met his loving wife, Mary Miles Daughters, while working for Celanese Chemical Company in Bishop, TX. They married in Kingsville, TX in December 1957. Together they had four children: John Alphonse III, Suzanne, Annette, and Stephen.

John was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend. He and Mary Miles were devoted members of St. Rita's Catholic Church for over 40 years. His post-retirement work included advocating for the mentally ill by serving on the Board of Directors at PLAN in Dallas, serving on the Board of Trinity Ministry for the Poor, and providing pro-bono financial planning for the newly widowed and divorced.
