Known as Camilla in her family, she was likely born in Sheldon, Vermont. She was a daughter of Eleazer and Sarah (Judd) Draper. Camilla moved with the family to Westmoreland, New York in the late 1830s, but was probably already working out of the home by 1840.
In 1850, Camilla was living in Franklin, Vermont, a town nine miles north of Sheldon. Around 1851 or 1852, she married Robert Mitchell. By 1860 the couple and their children were living in Sheldon, Vermont. The family subsequently moved to Wisconsin and then settled in the Clearwater area of Minnesota.
In 1885, the two youngest children remained at home with their parents. Robert died in 1897. Camilla remained on the farm, with a servant living with her in 1900.
