Robert, son of Robert and Susannah (Wheelock) Mitchell, was born in Highgate, Vermont. By 1850, he was working as a logger in St. Lawrence County, New York and living with his brother Adolphus and his family. By 1860 he had moved to Sheldon, Vermont and was a day laborer.

Robert married Camilla Irene Draper, daughter of Eleazor and Sarah (Judd) Draper. They had five children: Chlorie, Albert, Dianna, Augusta and Wesley.

The Robert and Camilla family and first moved to Winnebago County, Wisconsin. In about 1868 they moved to the Clearwater area, Wright County, Minnesota. In 1880, Robert continued to work as a laborer.

Robert died at the age of 69.
