May was a well-known naturalist and conservationist. She and her husband built many bird sanctuaries in New Hampshire. She founded the NH Nature Camp at Lost River Preservation in 1932. Their Holderness home attracted a flock of ruby-throated hummingbirds that were studied by MIT ornithologists.
