Harry was the eighth of ten children. He married Nettie Cole on November 28, 1890 in Phillipsburg, Warren County, New Jersey, and the couple raised four children: Gilbert, Chester, Nellie, and Kenneth. They also had a daughter, Ruth, who died as an infant. At the turn of the century, he worked as a weaver at a silk mill. Later, he began his career working for Vulcan Iron Works in Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, as a machinist at the railroad shop.
