George served in the Pennsylvania National Guard from July 12, 1894 to July 13, 1896.
He was the ninth of ten children. He worked as a barber, and owned his own shop on the Public Square in Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. On September 25, 1895, George married Estella Engle in Wilkes-Barre, and Rev. Leonard C. Minnbeck performed the ceremony. The couple had four sons: Earl, Elmer, and twins Kenneth and Elsworth.
