Neal was a downtown business man, 3 term Walker County Road Commissioner and retired from Alabama State Department of Agriculture. He was a loving and devoted father and Popneal. Neal was an avid golfer and teacher.
He was preceded in death by his former wife, Lou Akins; parents, Bill and Dutch Akins, brothers, Coleman Akins and Doug Akins; sister, Evelyn Jones.
He is survived by his children, Cherrie Lockhart (Mark) and Neal Akins Jr.; grandchildren, Kristin Colburn (Darin), Bart Lockhart (Amy), Buddy Akins (Tabatha) and Allison Lockhart; great grandchildren, Hayden, Evan, Eva, Brantley, Bryant, Annslee, Rylan and Rhett; sisters-in-law, Regina Akins and Marie Akins; his devoted friend and chosen brother, Charles Bishop; caretaker and loving friend, Shelly Hunter and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
