Henry, a farmer, went overland to California in 1849, along with his brother Milton, in a party led by Vance Davidson. They returned by September 1850, and Henry married Harriet Hawthorne on 31 Match 1852. They had at least four children: James A., Mary Ann, John C. and Emma A.

He was living in Washington County, Iowa when he enlisted age 34 as a Private in Company "G", 22nd Iowa Infantry on 11 August 1862. He joined up along with his brothers Milton and Cawsey. The Regiment was involved in garrison duty when he died of disease in Rolla. As Union soldier remains from Rolla were disinterred and reburied at Mound City shortly after the War, it is presumed his remans are here.
