He was living in Washington County, Iowa when he enlisted age 34 as a Private in Company "G", 22nd Iowa Infantry on 11 August 1862. He joined up along with his brothers Milton and Cawsey. The Regiment was involved in garrison duty when he died of disease in Rolla. As Union soldier remains from Rolla were disinterred and reburied at Mound City shortly after the War, it is presumed his remans are here.
