James moved with his family to Iowa about 1838. He was one of nine children, and never married. His brothers Milton, Henry J., and Causay (or Cawsey) C. Lingo all served in Company "G" of the 22nd Iowa Infantry (see their entries).

Kupka Cemetery was restored, and James's grave marker repaired, in 2007 by Arlen Nickolan of Washington County.
