Russell Montgomery was admitted to the U. S. Navel Academy, on May 21, 1896, from the Second Congressional District; appointed by Hon. W. R. Ellis. Resigned from U. S. Navel Academy, in May 01, 1897. Since 1854 there have been 13 admissions to the United States Naval Academy, of cadets from Oregon. Seven resigned after having been admitted, four were graduated, and two are at present at the Academy. [The Morning Oregonian (Portland, Oregon) Monday, Jan 01, 1900; part: 01; page: 03. Also, Saturday, June 29, 1901; page: 10.]

In the 1900 U. S. Federal Census, Russell, referred to himself as a gold miner. There seem to be no hard evidence that Russell ever worked at that occupation. Hopefully, in the future someone will fine more evidence of his life's journey.
