Henry's father, James Boyce Montgomery, moved his family to Portland, Oregon in 1871. Henry Moorhead Montgomery was the only child by his father's first wife, Rachel Anthony (Oct 1832- Aug 1863). Rachel was the daughter of Judge Joseph B. Anthony of Lycoming County, Pennsylvania.

James Boyce Montgomery wed his second wife, Mary Ann Phelps, on 23 October 1866, in her fathers plantation home, in Springfield, Missouri. She gave birth to seven children. Her father, John Smith Phelps held many offices including Governor of Missouri, eighteen years as congressman of same and military governor of Arkansas (resigning because ill health). His daughter, Mary was given the finest of educations. While married she left Portland with the children for about four years and acted as first lady for her father then Governor of Missouri. His wife, Mary Whitney had died.

Henry never married. In 1894, he started work at the United States Customs House in Portland, Oregon. He retired in 1929 as a deputy United States tax collector after thirty-five years of service. Henry died on 28 Jan 1932 at midnight in his residence at 195 SW Kingston Ave, Portland, Multnomah County, Oregon. Oregon Death Index Cert. #286.
