NASA Astronaut. Selected to be an astronaut in 1980 - in only the 2nd class that accepted women - Dr. Mary Cleave was a veteran of 2 Space Shuttle missions totaling nearly 11 days in space. She was the 8th American woman in space and 10th woman overall. Dr. Cleave was a 1965 graduate of Great Neck North High School in Great Neck, New York, and earned a B.S. in Biological Sciences from Colorado State University, a M.S. in Microbial Ecology and a doctoral degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering, both from Utah State University. Prior to joining NASA, she was a phycologist (one who studies algae). She had a long career at NASA in multiple roles. As an active astronaut, she was a veteran of 2 missions on the space shuttle Atlantis: STS 61-B in 1985 and STS-30 in 1989. She was the first woman to fly on the space shuttle after the loss of Space Shuttle Challenger in 1986. From 1991 to 2000, she worked at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland at the Laboratory for Hydrospheric Processes. From 2000 until her retirement in 2007, she worked in NASA administrative roles in Washington, D.C. as the deputy associate administrator for advanced planning in the Office of Earth Science and then associate administrator for the Science Mission Directorate.
