Valentine Foos was born in 1831, and moved with his parents Joseph Foos and Charlotte Hinton Foos to Vermillion County in 1837. His parents resided 2 or 3 miles west of Summit Grove, where the deceased grew to manhood. During the Civil War, he served his country faithfully in Co. D of the 85th IN REgiment. He was drawing a pension of $24 per month on heart disease, rheumatism, and other minor ailments. Vol had many warm friends and was highly esteemed by those who knew him best. He was a brother to Joe Foos of Newport, who served in the same company. He died in Roeback's saloon in Hillsdale while sitting at the bar. Heart disease is listed as the cause.
