When Little Jim was about a year old, his father (James, the husband of Agnes Jane) was murdered by a horse thief. The following is from obit of son, James Parks Nichols:
"...His father with a companion had captured a horse thief and were guarding him until they could take him to jail. The other man left the room and accidently his gun was left on the table. The thief grabbed the gun and shot and killed young Nichols.
Soon after the tragic death of her husband, Mrs. Nichols came to Henry County with little Jim..."

Agnes Jane died about five weeks after birth of son Charles, from complications associated with his birth.
Note: The first husband of Agnes, James M. Nichols, was murdered abt 1867, leaving her with their infant, James Parks Nichols. Soon after, she moved to Henry Co. where her parents lived.
