"J.P. NICHOLS FOUND DEAD
Jas. P. Nichols was found dead in bed at his home south of the Mound Springs school, early Friday morning. He had been in poor health for some time and the day previous to his death he was not feeling nearly so well but was able to go about his regular work. Dr. Rogers, of Brownington was summoned, who said his death was due to heart failure. He was found by his son's wife, Mrs. Paul Nichols. She and her husband and Jas. P. Nichols had lived together for the past four years.
James Parks Nichols, only child of James and Janie Nichols, was born in Jasper County, Missouri, December 19 1864, died March 25 aged 66 years three months and six days.
Little Jim was left fatherless when he was about a year old. His father with a companion had captured a horse thief and were guarding him until they could take him to jail. The other man left the room and accidently his gun was left on the table. The thief grabbed the gun and shot and killed young Nichols.
Soon after the tragic death of her husband, Mrs. Nichols came to Henry County with little Jim, and this had been his home since with the exception of a few months. Naturally the tragedy made an impression on the lad. He learned to abhor dishonesty or crime in any form. The son of pioneer parents, he inherited sterling qualities that have gone with him through life. He was noted among his friends and neighbors for his honesty, generosity and all the traits that go to make a good father and a fine citizen.
February 2 1890 he was married to Miss Ida Turner. Six children were given them. The moother and an infant passed away December 7, 1904.
The living children are Glen F., George H., Mary (now Mrs. Roy Raymond), Charles G and Paul, all of the southeast part of the county.
He also leaves three grandchildren, Jewel, Delora Jane and Dixie Raymond, the children of Mr and Mrs Roy Raymond. To these little children he was devoted. He also leaves two half sisters, Mrs. Frank Brown and Mrs. J.C. Detwieler, east of Clinton and a half brother, Charles Slavens, Wellington, CO; also three step sisters, Mrs. Calista Ballard, Rolling Bay WA; Mrs Willard Crews, Liberty, MO; Mrs. Harry Parks, south of Tightwad.
He was one of Henry County's bravest men, even though hardships were many. After the death of his wife, he bravely shouldered the responsibilities of filling the place of both mother and father. He never failed his family. These noble sons and daughters reflect the training he gave them. He was honest and upright in his dealings always.
Rev. A. N. Lindsey conducted his funeral at the Mt. Zion Methodist church Saturday afternoon. His body was laid in the Mt. Zion cemetery by the side of his wife.
The pall bearers were L.F. Smith, Willie Snyder, Clint Plumlee, Louis Parks, Hoyt DeCou, Art Myers."
