HOMICIDE - shot by horse thief

DOD 1866 or 1867, per obit of his son.

Son of James Freeman Nichols and Elizabeth "Eliza" Dunning

ch: James Parks "Little Jim" Nichols 1865-

James M. was murdered by a horse thief when his son was about a year old. The following is from the obit of his son, James Parks Nichols:

"...His father with a companion had captured a horse thief and were guarding him until they could take him to jail. The other man left the room and accidently his gun was left on the table. The thief grabbed the gun and shot and killed young Nichols.
Soon after the tragic death of her husband, Mrs. Nichols came to Henry County with little Jim..."

BURIAL THIS CEMETERY NOT PROVED, killed in Jasper Co. MO, no death record found. Placed here with parents and siblings. The marker posted here is illegible, is an exact design as his mother's, but cannot prove it is engraved with his name. Anyone with information is asked to send a SAC.
