Melvin Reed was born at Galena and was a lifetime resident.
He was married first to Clyda Bennett, September 09, 1933 at Miami, Ottawa, Oklahoma, and they operated a produce business and later ran Reed’s Cafe at Galena. They divorced. Clyda died June 13, 1987.
Melvin had married Bertha Stark Bullard in 1972 at Bentonville, Arkansas. Bertha died October 20, 1994.

Reed "half" siblings were Earl Dean, Jack Albert, William Curtis, Cleo Christian (brothers) and Vonita (sic) [Vinita Irene] and Juanita (twins....Juanita died in infancy) and lastly, Vera Mae Reed. GALENA, Kan. — Melvin Louis Reed, 86, Galena, died at 12:15 p.m. Thursday at a nursing home in Galena after a long illness.

Mr. Reed was born Aug. 2, 1908, at Galena and was a lifetime resident. He was a local businessman and had operated a produce business for a number of years. He also owned and operated Reed’s Cafe in Galena for 15 years and served as chief of police in Galena for four years during the 1950s. He retired from the Kansas Army Ammunition Plant at Parsons, where he had worked for 20 years.

He was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, both in Galena. He was past president of the Galena Lions Club and the Galena Chamber of Commerce. He also served as a volunteer fireman with the Galena Volunteer Fire Department from 1958 to 1970. He served two terms in the U.S. Navy from 1929 to 1932 and during World War II from 1943 to 1945.

He married Bertha Stark Bullard in 1972 at Bentonville, Ark. She died Oct. 20, 1994.

Survivors include a brother, William C. Reed, Galena.

Services will be at 2:30 p.m. today at Derfelt Funeral Home, Galena. The Rev. Charles Idleman will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Galena.

Pallbearers will be Fred Keyes, Robert Reed, Cleo Reed, Gary Frossard, William Reed and Bill Reed.
