William J. Walters, 74, Hays, died Wednesday, Jan. 4, 1989, at St. Anthony Hospital, Hays. Mr. Walters was born Oct. 12, 1914, at Catherine and was a lifelong resident of the area.

He was a retired meat cutter, an Army veteran of World War II and a member of St. Joseph's Church and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, both of Hays.

Survivors include his wife, Peg of the home; two sons, Thomas W. of Emporia and Donald M. of Wichita Falls, Texas; two daughters, Janice Robben of Topeka and Mary Jo Cousins of Prairie Village; five brothers, Herbert J. of Hays, Frank of Topeka, George of Placentia, Calif., Edward of Pevely, Mo., and Elmer of Aurora, Colo.; two sisters, Luella Kuhn of Victoria and Alice Gerstner of Amarillo, Texas; and nine grandchildren.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Joseph's Church, Hays, the Rev. Earl Meyer officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery with military honors by the Hays VFW. A Daughters of Isabella rosary will be said at 7:30 p.m. and a parish wake will be 8 p.m. Friday at Brock's North Hill Chapel.

Memorials can be made to the Ellis County Cancer Council. Visitation is from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. today and until the service Saturday at the funeral home.
