He married Lilly B. Kuhn on May 31, 1938 at Hays. She preceded him in death on Feb. 1, 1999.
He was a self-employed electrician, a member of St. Joseph's Church and St. Joseph's Council #1325 of the Knights of Columbus.
He is survived by two sons, Herbert D. Walters and wife Jan of Hays, and Jim Walters and wife, Chris of Hays; two daughters, Karen Dreher and her husband Ron of Hays, and Marie Pfannenstiel and her husband, Terry of Manhattan; by three brothers, George Walter of Placentia, Calif., Eddie Walters of Peverly, Mo., and Frank Walters of Topeka; by one sister, Alice Gerstner of Amarillo, Texas; 11 grandchildren, Jennifer Johnson and her husband, Stacy; Kevin Walters and his wife Angela; Michael Dreher and his wife, Beth; Ryan Dreher and his fiancee Tausha Hoffman; Josh Dreher; Jason, Jamie and Jackie Walters; Dawn Schramm and her husband, Chris; Mark Shields; and Jessica Gottschalk and her husband, Luke; and by six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Clarence, Ray, Bill and Elmer Walters; and by a sister, Luella Kuhn.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, March 9, at St. Joseph's Church in Hays. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Hays. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 8:30 to 9:45 a.m. Friday at Brock's North Hill Chapel, 2509 Vine Street. There will be a parish vigil service from 7 p.m. followed by a Knights of Columbus service, both at the funeral home. The family suggests memorials to Hospice of Hays Medical Center.
