American businessman. He was raised in Rutland, Vermont, where he graduated from high school in 1869. He received his bachelor's degree from Norwich University in 1873 and entered the lumber business in Appleton Wisconsin. After his father's death he returned to Vermont and joined his father's banking and brokerage business, S. M. Dorr's Sons. In 1889 he moved to St. Paul, Minnesota, where he was involved in several businesses, including banking, gold mining, and insurance. In 1902 Ripley moved to New Jersey in order for his children to be educated in the schools of the eastern United States. In 1904 he went to Chicago as a representative of the American Car Company, and he was in Chicago on business when he died. He was married to Helen Miller Thurston of St. Paul, and their children included: William Ripley (b. 1891); Cyrus Thurston (b. 1894); Julia Caroline (b. 1898); and a son, Seneca Milo, who died in infancy.
