"William Thompson SUTHERLIN was born in Indiana Dec. 8, 1837, died May 24, 1908. He moved with his parents in early life to SE Mo., and there grew to manhood. He taught in the public schools of Wayne Co., Mo. until he moved to Marshfield in 1877. He married Martha J. Garrison Nov. 25, 1866. 8 Children were born of this union, 7 girls and 1 boy. Mary, the oldest died at the age of 4 yrs. in Wayne Co., Rebecca was killed by the Marshfield cyclone at the age of 9 yrs. The other children, Mrs. Martha NAPIER, Mrs. Cora JACKSON, Mrs. Lillie DECKARD, Mrs. Josie TRANTHAM, Mrs. Sophia BODENHAMER and Charlie SUTHERLIN, were all present at the funeral, except Mrs. TRANTHAM who was unable to attend."
Went to California during the gold rush. Grandaughter Gladys Napier remembered hearing about W.T. and Martha Jane making the trip from Wayne County to Webster County by covered wagon in two weeks time. W. T. workes as teacher, was a clerk in Moore's store, and was a custodian at Drury College.
Civil War Veteran. Served with A Company, 2nd Regiment Calif. Cavalry from 20 Jan 1865 to 7 April 1866. Private. He entered service in Sacramento and was discharged in Camp Union, CA. His pension application filed in 1907 said he was 5 foot 10 1/2 inches tall with grey eyes and red hair. Pension affidavit filed in Feb. 1908 -- he said he was in Calif. from 1859 to 1866. He said he never saw a Confederate soldier while he was in service.
